“Mēs - Jauniešiem!” (“We - for young people!”) is a mentor network set up by the “Laiks Jauniešiem” association. Since 2023 it has supported young people aged 13 to 25 who face social challenges, fewer opportunities or difficulties in everyday life.

A mentor is a supportive person who listens, helps make sense of a situation and looks for solutions together with the young person. Regular meetings build the trust that helps a young person discover their strengths, learn the skills they need day to day and gradually become more independent. The young person, their needs and the goals they set themselves are at the centre of the work.

Support

How does a mentor help?

In one-to-one and group meetings a young person can:

  • talk through what matters to them and get support in dealing with difficulties;
  • develop communication, teamwork and everyday life skills;
  • build self-confidence and become aware of their own abilities;
  • set achievable goals and move towards them step by step;
  • get practical help in everyday situations;
  • take part in activities, discover new opportunities and gain experience.

In mentoring, conversations are complemented by doing things together. The support is adapted to the young person's situation, so skills can be learned and reinforced in real everyday settings.

Cooperation

Working with social services

As part of the mentor network we work closely with the Bauska Municipality Social Service and the Salaspils Municipality Social Service, providing mentor support to young people in both municipalities.

Cooperation between the association, the mentors and the social services helps ensure coordinated support that matches the young person's needs. The involvement of social work professionals is complemented by the mentor's regular presence and practical help in the young person's daily life.
