Following the rigged elections in 2024, Georgia’s ruling party, ‘Georgian Dream’, has pushed through the so-called ‘Russian law’ – the ‘Foreign Influence Transparency’ Act, which stipulates that media organisations and NGOs receiving more than 20 per cent of their funding from abroad must be registered as ‘foreign agents’.

🗣️ ❌ This replicates Russia’s repressive model and gives the authorities a tool to put pressure on independent organisations; this is precisely why tens of thousands of people are taking to the streets to defend Georgia’s European path.

✍🏻 Your voices in Georgia – on the streets of Tbilisi – speak clearly: Georgia belongs to the people who believe in freedom, dignity and European values. This is not ‘external influence’ or ‘provocation’ – it is the people’s desire to decide their own future. Democracy means that those in power listen to their people, rather than trying to silence them.

🙏🏻 We spent five days in Georgia – during which time we stood outside the parliament building, walked through the city, and spoke to protesters, students, activists and parents with children. We heard the same message time and again: you want to live in a free, open and respectful society that is part of the European family. This cannot be erased by pressure or an atmosphere of fear.

🙌🏻 The “Time for Youth” team will continue to support its partners in Georgia as they fight for a European Georgia – whether on the streets, within organisations, or in their day-to-day work with young people.

📌 Our visit to Georgia has come to an end, but we remain with you – in our work, in our collaboration and in the firm conviction that Georgia’s place is alongside the free, democratic nations of Europe. 💙 🇬🇪 🇪🇺
